Alta is known for receiving more snow than most Utah resorts, with an average annual snowfall of 545 inches (13.8 m). Now that the storms have cleared and the incredible mountain ops team have been able to get out there and sort of the resort we are seeing reports that this storm left Alta ski resort with over 100” (2.5m) of fresh snow in less than 7 days. Criteria snow amounts occurred at Alta with 6 ' and in Laketown with 5 '. Altas closing date is Sunday, April 23rd. Alta is well on their way to eclipsing 800 inches on the season. OpenSnow is forecasting 23 inches over the next 5 days and an additional 28 inches in the 5-10 days forecast. Interlodge is only called when there is extreme risk of natural avalanches which could hit the small ski resort town as its at the base of a large valley. As mentioned earlier, it doesnt seem like the snow is going to stop anytime soon. Last week an extreme Interlodge event was declared at both Alta and Snowbird due to the huge amount of snowfall coming down hard and fast. Its position deep in Little Cottonwood Canyon surrounded by the soaring peaks of the Wasatch Mountains means that any storm cycle that comes across the flat plains and picks up all its moisture from the great Salt Lake will get get stuck in the mountains and then just deposit light powdery snow non stop. I have found them great for assistance in walking in snow or ice for balance. The National Weather Service reported impressive snow totals as of Wednesday morning: Tooele 26 inches. A record 45.0 inches fell at Alta Guard Station in September 1982 (also the record wettest month in SLC and many other locations on the Wasatch Front). There’s a chance of snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Alta Ski Resort in Utah is known globally for being one of the snowiest ski resorts in not only the region but also North America.
